Downhill along the Vinschgau valley
One of the loveliest cycle paths in the whole Alpine region leads from the Reschen pass through the Vinschgau valley and on to Lake Garda. The clearly-marked, well-maintained route passes grapevines and impressive icy glaciers and is ideal for all cycle fans. It follows the river Etsch as it flows down past sights of historic and cultural interest all the way from Reschen past the spa town of Meran and southwards to the shores of Lake Garda.
The path leads through medieval towns and past proud castles, elegant, stately homes, idyllic, peaceful little villages, extensive woods and forests, Alpine meadows and pastureland with the soothing sound of river water in the background.
The new Vinschgau railway line means that cycle fans can either take their own bikes on the train with them or hire bikes from several stations along the line from Mals to Meran. The special one day EventCard ticket costs 20,00 € per person and includes the hire of either a mountain bike or town bike. You can start riding where you want and stop at any station or place of interest you may choose, returning hired bikes to the listed stations along the way. Please bear in mind that the train can only carry a certain number of guests' own bikes and that bikes-to rent are in great demand on high-days and holidays.
Mountain bike fans stay at Naturns and use the village as the starting point for a number of MB tours in the surrounding area. Numerous MB paths follow in the steps of the Transalp-Challenge event as they cross the mountains from one isolated little farm to the next.
